I've already used my X1 Visa once to enter China. May I use it again?

I am a university student from America who is studying at a university in Guangzhou, China. Because my landlord did not have proper documentation, I was not able to get my temporary residency permit in time from the police office in order to renew my 1 year residency permit （外国人居留许可）. Because of this I had to return to America immediately before my current residency permit expired. May I use my X1 Student that has multiple entries to once again enter the country and THEN renew my residency permit? My X1 student has yet to expire.
