About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

A=Japan, B=Hong Kong, C=Shanghai...D=Canada

My employer is flying from somewhere in Japan (yet to be determined), to Hong Kong, meetings in Hong Kong, then on to Shang Hai for leisure. He will then depart for Canada. Does this Visa apply to his situation?

He can do the transit without visa as long as he doesn't travel again through Hong Kong on the way from Shanghai to Canada.
