About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Confirmation of visa exemption and adequate notification process

We fly from home (Sydney, Australia) to Shanghai and leave 3 days later by cruise ship, next stop Japan. We will be staying in Shanghai the whole time. Are we eligible for the 144 hour visa exemption and is it enough to only notify the airline when we check in for our first flight? Do we need to notify the China Consulate in Sydney?

Your trip is eligible for the 144 hour free transit exemption in Shanghai. You need to inform the airlines when you board the flight to Shanghai. There is no need to notify the consulate.
