About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

9 hour layover. I am UK passport holder looking at flight with a 9 hour layover in Shanghai

(flight is between japan and UK with the layover in China)...if I want to leave the airport do I need a visa and is the free transit ok? Would not be staying overnight so would I have to go to police station to register?

You don't need a transit visa. Whether you can leave the airport or not is at the discretion of the immigration officer on the day. You wouldn't need register at a police station.
