I'm planning to visit China and would like the option to stay and explore for as long as possible especially as it seems there is only one standard price for a tourist L. However it's not clear what the options are on the official site.

If so, you can try to apply for a 2-year one which costs the same as single-entry one. The 2-year one will allow you to enter and exit China for multiple times within 2 years. It will be preferable.
