About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am a US citizen traveling to HongKong for 2 weeks. Can I visit Shangai for 2 days without a visa?

My wife and I will be visiting a relative living in Hong Kong for 2 weeks. During that time could we make a short (less than 72 hours) visit to Shanghai to visit a friend there without obtaining entry permit?
