About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Depart Seoul to Beijing (<72 hours) to Hong Kong (< 72 hours) Return to Seoul

Do I need a visa for this itinerary?

Yes that is fine for US passport. You can actually stay in Beijing 144 hours now on a transit without visa. Korea > Beijing > Hong Kong is allowed routing. Where you go after Hong Kong doesn't matter
