About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Do I have to get my checked bag at Guangzhou to leave the airport on a layover?

I am arriving from LAX after a 15 hour flight and would like to check into the Pullman Hotel for a shower during my 4 hour layover. Can I use the 24 visa and since my bag is checked to my destination do I still have to retrieve it and recheck it when I go back to the airport?

Your chance of leaving the airport is slim. Multiple reports indicated that as of 2017 Guangzhou only allows passengers in transit to leave the airport if their layover is more than 8 hours. You can try your luck at immigration but don't be surprised if they won't let you into the country.
