Do we need a visa. We are flying from London Heathrow with Qatar airlines to Shanghai

on the 3rd January 2019. We have an overnight stop in Shanghai before embarking on our cruise with Princess cruises from Downtown Hongkou port on the 5th January.

As long as you will go to a third country which is different from the country before entering Shanghai, you don't need a visa as you can apply for 144h twov in Shanghai.
