Is a visa needed if arriving some days earlier than the Shanghai cruise?

Helping friends book a cruise... roundtrip SH on Royal Caribbean's Spectrum of the Seas. They want to go to SH a few days early. Are they eligible for the 144 hour free visa? Thank you for your help!
