About:China Visa Exemption

Hi, I am a U.S. citizen. I am transiting through Shanghai (for a period less than 72 hours)

to a 3rd country (India) from the United States. However, my ticket from the U.S. to Shanghai (on United Airlines) is a separate ticket to that of Shanghai - India (purchased separately through an Indian travel agency). Will the United Airlines check-in permit me to board the U.S. to Shanghai flight since they do not see the separate Shanghai - India flight in their systems for me to permit a visa exempt travel though Shanghai?

Dealing with ground staff is always tricky. The quickest way is to tell them that they need to put China as a transit point instead of a destination in Timatic (airline's tool to determine whether you need a visa). There was never a requirement for both flights to be under the same itinerary.
