If your intended stay in China is less than seven days, you can apply for the transit visa. If it's longer, you might as well apply for the tourist visa. The required documents include your passport, a filled application form glued with your recent color photo, your residence permit in Japan, and round-trip flight tickets. If you apply for the tourist visa, you may also need to submit hotel bookings in China.
