About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

One way ticket out

My family live in shanghai and will Be leaving for good on the 2nd August. My visa runs out on the 31st July so we are planning a holiday in Japan from 26th to 31st July. Then we spend two days in shanghai and fly out with a one way ticket. My question is, since my entry permit runs out on the 31st will it be ok that I apply for a transit G coming back from japan on the 31st and then leaving on the 2nd? The flight tickets were bought separately so was concerned it's not a transfer in my itinerary.

Depends on your nationality, you may qualify for 144-hour TWOV in Shanghai. However if you do not qualify (I.e., not holding passports issued by one of the 53 countries), your chance of getting a transit visa in Japan as a tourist there is slim to none. Plan accordingly.

Thank you. We are from Australia. Our flights are pvg-Okinawa-pvg-Montreal. So I’m just focusing on the Okinawa - pvg - Montreal part of the journey

Okinawa - pvg - Montreal will be fine for the free transit in Shanghai. Don't worry.
