About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a Visa in China or will I qualify for the 72 hour free permit?

HELP, HELP - Some advice please!!!!!
On 9th February (2019) I fly from the UK to Singapore,
I then stay for 3 days in Singapore and then board a ship which
travels onward to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia - from there the ship travels onto Hong Kong
where I stop overnight on board. Thereafter we sail to Shanghai arriving on the
22nd February. I then stay on board the ship until the morning of the 23rd at which time I am transferring
to an hotel in Shanghai where I stay for 2 nights (23 and 24th Feb).
On the 25th February I fly home directly back to the UK. My flight leaves Pudong Airport at 10.55am.
So can you please advise if I qualify for a Free visit to China/Shanghai or willI need a Chinese entry permit.

Hong Kong is considered a different country/region so Hong Kong > Shanghai > UK is ok for transit without visa. If the boat from Hong Kong > Shanghai stops elsewhere in china then you need visa. If flight from Shanghai to the UK stops in Hong Kong or elsewhere in china (even if same plane transit) then you also need visa. Must be Country A > China > Country B

Thank you for your most informative reply. At last I have a definitive answer. The Cruise Company was non committal when asked and The Chinese Embassy at London was hopeless.

Clearly as I arrive in Singapore - then board the ship directly to Malaysia - then directly onward to Hong Kong and then onward directly to Shanghai - and thereafter flying directly home to London I do not need a Chinese Visa.

I hope you concur with my thoughts and may I thank you once again most sincerely for your valued guidance.
