Flight to Shanghai via Shenzhen on Air China

My wife and I are flying to Shanghai on December 31 with a five and one half hour layover at Shenzhen Airport to connect to another Air China flight to Shanghai. As a U.S. passport holder, do I need a Chinese visa or does the 144-hour Shanghai free transit exemption policy apply?

You won't qualify for 144 hr free transit, and you should apply for a visa for this trip beforehand.
