About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hi, 144 hour visa free transit

I am considering the following route, would the 144 hour free transit apply in this situation where I enter mainland China once at the beginning of my trip, leave the country and then re-enter once again at the end via Taiwan:

Canada ->Hong Kong - > Shanghai -> South Korea

Then after traveling South Korea, Japan and Taiwan, my route home would be:

Taiwan -> Beijing -> Canada

Your trip qualifies for the 144 hr free transit in Shanghai and Beijing. No visa will be needed. Nice trip.

Alternatively, would this work as well?

Canada -> Hong Kong -> Shanghai -> Taiwan

Then on the way back

South Korea -> Beijing -> Canada.

Furthermore are we allowed to stay in hotels during that 144 hour/6 day period or do we have to return to the airport each night?
