About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a 72 hour visa?

I am traveling from US to Shanghai on Sept 12th arriving 13th staying in a hotel departing 15th on cruise ship to Japan for 8 days then returning to Shanghai airport and leaving same day on September 23rd back to US. Do I need a 72 hour free transit?
