About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

indian passport holder with two layovers in china(less than 24hrs including flight change

We are planning to travel from Vancouver (YVR CANADA) to India (CCU KOLKATA) with China Eastern airlines where we have two layovers in china . One is shanghai (7 hrs layover), then a flight from shanghai to Kunming (3.5 hrs journey) and finally a layover at Kunming for 6.5 hrs. (total stay in china would be around 17 hrs)
Do we need a transit G for this travel or are we eligible to take a free transit? If in case we need a visa then where and when should we apply for it. Can we apply online?
