You need to make sure that your YVR-Shanghai flight does not stop elsewhere in Mainland China or Japan, and your Shanghai-Japan flight does not stop elsewhere in Mainland China. Other parts of the trip are irrelevant to Chinese immigration. The instructions are somewhere on this website.
