About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

If I went from Bangkok to Shanghai and back, could I use 144 visa? Im an american with a Thai home

There is no "144 visa", only 144 hours transit without visa. And since Bangkok-Shanghai-Bangkok isn't a transit that won't apply to you. You must get a visa or change your plan.
