how to change from z to q1 visa

Hi my z is expiring on 6th July and I want to change it to Q1 as my Wife is Chinese. I've heard that I need to exit china and possibly go to Hong Kong to cancel my z first and then apply for a Q1 and re enter china. Is that correct? And what documents I need to bring along? Appreciate anyone's help here.
