How to change from Z to Q1 visa

Hi my z is expiring on 6th July and I want to change it to Q1 as my Wife is Chinese.
I've heard that I need to exit china and possibly go to Hong Kong to cancel my z first and then apply for a Q1 and re enter china. Is that correct? And what documents I need to bring along? Appreciate anyone's help here.

Terence, it is possible for you to convert the work Z type to Q1 type at the exit and entry administration of the local PSB within China. It’s worth a try.
The required documents include your passport, the application form, a passport-style photo, Chinese residence permit, an invitation letter from your wife and copy of her Chinese ID card, as well as your marriage certificate, and other documents the consular officers consider necessary.
