I am not sure that whether you are talking about 72-Hour Visa Free or not. If you mean that you will fly from one country to another country and transit in Guangzhou, you can apply for the 72-Hour Visa Free permit at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, and then you are able to stay in Guangzhou for 3 days and join in a tour.

However, if you say that you want to apply for 24-Hour Direct Transit, I am afraid that it is not allowed to extend extra days in China and you can only stay in China for one day.

As a result, I think 72-Hour Visa Free is a good choice for you if you plan to transit in Guangzhou for less than 3 days.
