About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Round Trip From Sri Lanka to USA, 15 hours Layover in Shanghai

I brought a ticket for a round trip from USA to Sri Lanaka . I have a 15 hours layover in Shanghai . My nationality is Sri Lankan but I'm a student in USA ( I have valid USA entry permit) . I'm not suppose to leave the airport within my transit which is less than 24 hours. Do I need to have entry permit?

One of my friends traveled in January 2018, without any Chinese visa from the same route but with same USA entry permit status and with Sri Lankan passport, according to this Website Sri Lankans are not eligible to TWOV. Is this a new rule for Sri Lankans?

I shall be thankful for a reply

Hi, Ishani, as I know, the Sri Lanka passport holders cannot enjoy mainland China free transit policy for years. I haven't heard that the situation that your friends with USA visa status and Sri Lankan passport met. Maybe this is new. You can ask your airline to call immigration themselves or inquire with TIMATIC, which is an IATA database which airlines use.

Dear Ishini,

I have the same problem. The guideline from the embassy website says we don’t need a transit G. When I went in 2015, I had the visa and the officials mentioned it is not necessary. When I went back in 2016, from Japan to Sri Lanka via Shanghai, I didn’t get any transit visa and stayed for 22h in Shanghai airport. I also want to confirm this is a new rule or not.
