Can you change from X2 to X1 in China ?

I am in Shanghai on a X2 right now, but will start at the university in Spetember. My current visa expires 24th of July, and I plan to come back in the beginning of August, but the university letter of invitation will only start 1 week before the semester starts.
Can I come to China on a X2, and then change it to an X1 in China, or do I have to go back to Europe to apply for the X1?
