We are residents of the United States and will be arriving in Shanghai on January 3, 2019. We will leave on a cruise on January 5, 2019 and visit several countries before arriving in Singapore on January 19, 2019 to return to the United States. What kind of visa do we need and how do we get it?

That depends on your nationality and your stops immediately before and after Shanghai. When traveling outside North America, only your nationality (I.e. your passport) matters.
