About:China Transit Visa

Shanghai Sightseeing

I hold a US passport flying from JFK with a 13 hour layover in Shanghai Then onto Bali. I would like to do some sightseeing in Shanghai on my layover. Do I just need a 24 hr visa free transit or a temporary stay permit? Where at the Shanghai airport do you go to get this? Is it easy to get and does it cost money?

Hi, you qualify for the 24 hr direct transit in Shanghai, and you can apply for it at the transit counter within Shanghai airport. If you can show hotel booking confirmations, maybe you can leave the airport to go sightseeing.

I'm not going to have a hotel confirmation because we will only be in Shanghai for 13 hours. So are you saying I may have a problem getting out of the airport? I want to go sightseeing, I don't want to spend money on a tour to pick me up at the airport and not be able to go. So what is the best way to go about doing this? What do I need to get to be able to sight see?

Someone said that since February, Shanghai no longer allows people with layovers for less than 24 hours to clear immigration regardless of nationality. But sometimes, people were let in when they showed their hotel booking confirmations. If you doubt that, you can call the Shanghai airport to confirm this.
