When you want to use the 72h free transit policy, only 1 stop in China is allowed. So you won't qualify for 72 hr free transit if you will travel to Guangzhou from Zhanjiang.

Actually the 72-hour transit covers all of Guangdong province so that's fine if you are departing Guangzhou to HK by air and your flights in and out of Mainland China do not have any other stops than Guangzhou. You can travel to Zhanjiang after arriving in Guangzhou.
