About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa. I’ve got a return ticket to Shanghai from London for 4 May and back on 23rd May.

I’ve also booked a return ticket to Japan from Shanghai on the 9th and back to Shanghai on the 17th. Am I eligible for this free transit? If so, is booking confirmation enough or will I need something else in order to board the plane and obtain the transit visa.

Yes. You should provide your outbound ticket receipt to airline staff, although immigration may also need to see your proof of accommodation.

Ok great thanks. Will the airline be aware of this when boarding here in London? Or do I have to contact them in advance?

There's no point contacting the airline in advance. You're unlikely to experience any problem checking in, but leave a little extra time if you're concerned about it. Carry printed copies of your confirmed tickets.
