About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise arrives at Tianjin Port from Seoul’ we have one night stay before departing

We are Australian citizens travelling on a cruise which ends at Tianjin Port 26/4, we stay one night in Beijing and fly home to Australia via Guangzhou on 27/4. Can we use the 144-hour free visa?

You cannot use the 144-hour TWOV if your outbound flight has a stop in China. You are only eligible for 24-hour TWOV and you need a visa if your layover (from scheduled docking time in Tianjin to scheduled departure time in Guangzhou) is more than 24 hours.

Thanks for your informative response. If our flight via Guangzhou is for connecting flight purposes only and we are only there for 2 hours and don’t actually leave the airport, do we still need a fully paid visa?

You don't have an option to clear immigration in Beijing. You have to clear it in Guangzhou which will result in you breaking immigration law since the permit is valid for Beijing and the surrounding areas only. You can change your flight so it does not stop elsewhere in Mainland China or get a visa.
