About:China Visa Exemption

Greetings.Do I need visa for China?

Plan to travel from U.S. to Shanghai then to Taiwan;
From Taiwan to Beijing then to the US.
Do I need to apply for a China's visa?
Can we apply for the 144-hour-free visa when we land?
Thanks.
