Tony from USA - Layover Question

Hi!

I will be traveling from Tokyo to Beijing April 9. There is a layover of 18 hours in Shanghai though. Would it be possible to stay in Shanghai for that time and then go onwards to Beijing the next day? From Beijing I will leave that Saturday, April 14 to travel to the USA. I know I can travel Tokyo > Beijing > USA but what if there is a stop in Shanghai? Is Tokyo > Shanghai > Beijing > USA possible?
