Passport ID is required as part of the purchase process as well. I used travel China guide to buy my tickets. You can buy at the train station but you may not get the tickets you want plus you have to go earlier for security checks and find the waiting rooms to board the train. Boarding starts 15 mins before departure time. You also need to go through security checks going on the subway
