About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

USA->Bangkok>Beijing>USA

My friends are flying to Bangkok from the US for about two weeks and then stopping in Beijing for about 4 days on the way back to the US. Of course, they do not need visas for Thailand as they are US citizens. So the routing is:
USA->Bangkok>Beijing>USA

Is that eligible for a 144 hour visa-free stay?

That's fine if Beijing is their only stop in Mainland China.

If you are not going to a third country (just US-Beijing-US) then it won't apply to you.
