About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Our airline, China Eastern, changed our flight schedule.

The layover from Chicago ORD to Shanghai PVL and PVL to Manila Philippines got changed from 6 hours to 24.5 hours. The airline told us they will will provide shuttle and hotel for us. Now, do we need to get 72 hour free transit since it's over 24 hours? If so, how do we get the visa?

If you are US citizens, then all you need to do is to go to the dedicated immigration counter after arrival to get your 144-hour entry permit (not a visa). If you are Filipino citizens, you need to contact your local Chinese consulate/embassy to get a transit G type.

We had 17hour layover and they did not let us leave the airport. We asked at the 24hour transit line. And they directed us back to the airport. We ask atleast 5 different people and they told us no that the laws changed on feb 1 2018. And they will only let us leave if our connecting flight was from different airport.

Wow! Thank you for all the responses. We ended up cancelling our flight, and I’m glad we did! Don’t want to go thru all these hassle.
