About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Additional Stopover in China

Hi! I purchased a flight to Beijing and then a separate flight to Chaing mai in Thailand, but the trip to Thailand has a 1-hr layover in another city in China. Does this disqualify me from the 72 hour visa free entry? (Since there is a short stop in China on the way to Thailand?).

Tiffany, if you have two layovers in China, you can only use the 24 hour direct transit. Or you need to apply for a transit G type.

Thanks! I just changed my flight. It is ok if they are all separate tickets, right? Now my trip is Florida to Beijing, then Beijing direct to Chiang Mai in Thailand, then Thailand to U.S. I had to book each leg separately. Is that ok? (I'm flying Delta to Beijing and home from Thailand, but I had to book ChinaAir from Beijing to Thailand because Delta had no flights between those countries).

Also, I read that the time limit starts at midnight on the day you land. We land at 2:05, but leave at 6:05 (which would be about 76 hours after LANDING, but less than the 72 hours after midnight of the day we land).

Separate tickets are OK. Beijing has 144-hour transit now so you don't have to worry about going over 72 hours.
