About:China Tourist Visa

I m a US citizen and I prefer to visit China as tourist without following a tour agency.

Do I have to obtain roundtrip air tickets before applying for tourist visa ?

Tam, yes, you need to provide round trip air tickets before making application if you don’t have an invitation letter.
