About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

One stop and one transit

I am a Dutch citizen. I am flying from Frankfurt to Sydney. I have one transit in Guangzhou of 10 hours where I want to leave the airport. But I have one stopover in Chengdu on my flight from Frankfurt to Guangzhou. It will however remain the same flight number. Which visa do I need?

You need a transit visa prior to arrival.

Thank you for your answer! Could you tell me why I can not use the 24 hour visa free transit? Can I use that one if I am not leaving the airport en Guangzhou?

"Transit including multiple stops within China is permitted at CAN only when the first transit point is Beijing (PEK). The total maximum transit time is 24 hours."

The text above is copied and pasted from Timatic, and that's why you need a visa. Leaving the airport or not is always irrelevant to Chinese transit without visa.

Thank you again for your answer,

I called the embassy just to be sure and to make an appointment but they told me I am eligible for the 24 hour visa free rule. Let's hope they are right!
