Is it usable for a short return trip (US -> Shanghai -> US) ?

Hi,

Can I claim I am in transit if I have a RETURN ticket (only two countries involved), or does it require going to a DIFFERENT third country afterwards? e.g. Can I use the 144h transit allowance when doing US -> Shanghai -> US within 144 hours ?
