Am arriving in Shanghai via cruise ship from Yokohama. We will be docked for about 40 hours. I will be taking a tour outside the city and a tour of the city and maglev. Do I need a visa and if not what procedure or documentation do I carry to support access to the country.

If you travel like Japan-Shanghai (40 hours)-USA or a third country instead of Japan, you can use the 144 hour free transit. No transit G type or tourist L type will be needed then. You are allowed to travel around Shanghai city, Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.
