About:Visa Policy of China

I am a U.S. citizen, is my passport enough to enter china?

to stay in China for 6 months, what is needed?

Of course not. You need to apply for a tourist L type for China, and it doesn’t allow to stay for 6 months. You should apply for a multiple-entry L type.
