There are five of us travelling, are taxi easier than the train or are we going to be sitting in traffic for a long time.

One taxi can only take 4 adult passengers, so you need two. In my experience, train/metro is more convenient. You can take Western Suburban Line and get off at the West Gate of the garden, or take line 4 to Beigong Gate. By that, it has no traiffic jam and the cost is much less.
