About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

CuriousChicago

Hello!

I hold a US American passport and I'm curious if my original flight itinerary from Chicago to Shanghai (with a 6 day stay) then a return flight back to Chicago (but first with a short layover in Japan first, then directly back to Chicago) would I still be eligible for the 144-hour VISA-FREE entrance into China???

Yes it is eligible (assuming your Chicago-Shanghai flight doesn't stop in Japan or China).

You are eligible if your ORD-PVG flight is nonstop.

Ah wow. Do you know why my flight ORD-PVG must be direct??
I'm worried because it seems like there may be a loophole in this VISA-FREE "transit", as Shanghai is actually my "destination" (where I will plan on spending 144hours), and I just so happen to have a short layover in Japan (a third country, but not my "final destination") BEFORE returning back to ORD (Chicago)...

Otherwise I may have to change my flight accordingly...
