US Passport with stops in WUH and CAN

I have a US Passport. Flight will be from SFO to SGN with two stops in CAN and WUH in between. I have no intention of leaving the airports during transit. However I have read about issues with multi-stop through WUH. Will I be able to board my flights at CAN and WUH without a Chinese Visa?

Another scenario is I fly from LAX to SGN with one stop in CAN. Will this require a Chinese Visa?

Thanks!

To add, both of the flights would be with China Southern. I was hoping the airports in CAN and WUH are equipped with international transit areas where Visa is not required. But I have never been to either.

My last choice to avoid any transit Visa issues is to book a flight with China Eastern for SFO -> PVG -> SGN. I believe this will allow me 24 hour transit.

Passengers travelling on US and Canadian passports are not permitted to use the multiple-stop transit within China if transiting through Wuhan. In addition, transit including multiple stops within China is permitted at CAN only when the first transit point is Beijing. So your original plan is a non-starter for visa-free travel. A one-stop route will be ok.
