About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

24 TWOV not recognised by airline

Hi, I recently travelled from Warsaw to Auckland via Beijing and Chengdu. The total time in china was under 20 hours so my understanding was that we could get 24 hour TWOV however, 10 mins before boarding the first flight (Warsaw to Beijing) we were informed that the airline (Polish Airlines) did not recognise it and we could not board the flight. We were then required to purchase a direct flight out of china (Beijing to Sydney) so that we could board the flight and get the 72 hour TWOV. In Beijing we asked the 24/72 hour TWOV desk if our original route was ok and they said it would have been fine. Would you be able to confirm this and also possibly provide a link to official documentation which states the rules for this visa waver as we would like to lodge a complaint against the airline.
Kind Regards.

Can't post link here but it's documented by Timatic, a tool frequently uses by airlines to determine whether you'll need a visa.

Thanks for your response. So we should have been able to do the original route?
