How best to reach from Sun moon to Hualien?

Take Bus 1833 to Taipei Bus Station first, and then walk across the road to Taipei Station. Catch the train to Hualian. The bus takes about 4h and 460NTD; the train takes 2-3h and 440NTD.

If I understand correctly, there is no direct route between Sun Moon Lake and Hualian?
