About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

New Visa Application Process?

I have been contacting several layover tour companies to ask about our layovers in April. We are going from the US to Thailand and will have an 8h 40m layover on the way out and a 7h layover on the way home. We want to see the great wall on our 8+hr layover and the forbidden city on our 7h layover. One company advised that there is a new process for getting the layover visa and that the process is now taking 3+hr instead of the usual 1-1.5h. They told us that neither of our layovers are long enough now to see anything. Has anyone else heard about this?

Based on what you said, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit in Beijing for both legs of your trip.
However, from where I stand, the time may be tight for you to go sightseeing. You need to travel around in a hurry.

There's no new process really, it's just that the line is getting too long because there's usually only one lane for transit passengers not holding a visa. If you want to avoid the lane you can apply for a 10-year L type.
