LAX>PVR>HKG (Dec 27/28) with return of HKG>PEK(26 hr layover)>LAX (Dec 29/30)

I want to be sure that I still qualify for the 72 hour free transit as I do not have a third country in my travel plans. Would I still be able to leave the Beijing airport and make use of the hotel reservation I have there? I do not have a regular Visa for China.

Hong Kong counts as a third region for immigration purposes.

Thanks Rob. Does it make any difference that I am leaving Beijing directly for home? Meaning my third country is only on the inbound flight. Or am I overcomplicating this?

Your flight will be HK – BJ – USA, right? As Rob said, HK is regarded as a third region, so you can enjoy the 72h visa free transit.
