About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

phuket to Shenzhen, Shenzhen to Shanghai, Shanghai to Montreal.

We are currently in Phuket Thailand and are Canadian citizens with valid passports,

we were misinformed about needing an entry permit of any sort when leaving Canada and when we landed in Shanghai the air Canada worker informed us we could not continue on our trip without rebooking directly out of china from the Shanghai airport. It was all very confusing and he spoke almost no English, we rebooked last minute tickets direct to Phuket.

Our return flight back to Canada is the same but the more I read about temporary visas I wonder if there is in fact a way for us to travel through without issue? Our layover from Shenzhen to Shanghai is only 3 hours and we would not be leaving the airport.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need a visa to transit in Shenzhen. No way around it.

If you have paid for your ticket to Phuket again in Shanghai, I would consider starting legal proceedings in your provincial court since this is an obvious f-up on the airline's part.
