I am flying from Australia to Hong Kong onto Shanghai arrive at 16.30 on 21 August 2018 and then leave on cruise to Sydney 24 August 2018 at 18.00 will I be covered with the 144 hour visa is there documentation I need to carry with me to go through customs besides my passport and tickets Veronica Australia

Yes. You are qualified for the 144-hour visa free transit. You are suggested to inform the airline when boarding, fill the arrival/departure card and then go to 144-hour visa free counter at the immigration inspection to apply for the permit with your passport, visa for a third country and the onward cruise ticket.
