Stay 4 days in Shanghai and then going to my final destination via Kunming airport- Do I need Visa?

I have booked the flight from SFO (San Francisco) to Shanghai and stay in 4 days then I have a transfer flight to go to my final destination to another country via Kunming, Changshui International airport ( 14 hours layover time). Do I need entry permit? How does 144 hours transfer work? We will be out by China 5th day(!44 days means 6 days)
